AFCON AFCON 2023: Fae Urges Players To Remain Humble

Ivory Coast interim head coach Emerse Fae has urged his players to remain humbled ahead of their AFCON 2023 Round of 16 match against Senegal.

After avoiding early elimination at the Africa Cup of Nations and making it into the round of 16 of their own competition as a fortunate loser, the Elephants get to start over.

However, it won’t be an easy path to redemption after a devastating 4-0 loss to Equatorial Guinea left them third in their group.

As one of the four best third-place finishers, the Ivorians will have to wait to go to the knockout stage unless Zambia’s defeat against Morocco is confirmed.

They were drawn to play Senegal, the only team to win all three of their group matches in the tournament, in the last 16 on Monday in Yamoussoukro.

Fae who was appointed to replace dismissed coach Jean-Louis Gasset will be in charge in the dugout against Senegal.

Fae while speaking with journalists said;

“Since Monday, we’ve been holding our breath a little.

We were really between the disappointment of our own result and the fear of not qualifying further in our own Cup of Nations tournament,” Fae said.

“We didn’t go through because we were good on the pitch.

“So, we must remain humble and have measured joy.

We must use the relief of this qualification as motivation now to do better,” added the 40-year-old who had a brief stint at Reading in his playing days and competed at three Cup of Nations finals.

Senegal’s easy passage highlighted how tough they will be to defeat and cemented their status as joint favourites alongside Morocco, who play South Africa in San Pedro on Tuesday.

The derby between Cameroon and Nigeria in Abidjan on Saturday, which revives a rivalry dating back 60 years, might be the match of the round, though.

Nigeria defeated Egypt 3-2 at the same stage of the 2019 Cup of Nations, the final meeting between the two nations in seven prior editions of the competition.
