The Democratic Republic of Congo has qualified to the quarter finals of the AFCON 2023 after a dramatic 8-7 penalty shoot out won against Egypt.
The Leopard like the Pharoahs got to the Round of 16 of the competition without winning any game in their group after playing out a draws in their respective groups.
The Pharoahs without Mohamed Salah who got injured in the second Group B game against Ghana came into to win so that their captain could return from injury and join them to win the title for a record 8-time.
However, DR Congo took the lead in the 37th minute after they caught the Egyptian unawares from a throw in as Yoanne Wissa cross was slotted into the net by Elia.
The Pharoahs equalized from the spot in added time through Mustapha Mohamed after the Referee adjudged Batunbisika to have fouled Hegazi inside the box following a review of the VAR.
Both teams continued to look for the winning goal in the second half in a keenly contested game that saw the Pharoahs dominated possession but to no avail.
The game dragged on to extra time for the first time in the Round of 16 of the AFCON 2023.
Egypt were reduced to 10-man in the 97th minute after Mohamed Hamdi was shown a second yellow card.
But the game dragged to penalty shootout as DR Congo failed to make their one man advantage count.
Both teams missed their second penalty shootout with Mohamed missing for the Pharoahs while Masuaku failed to give the Leopards the advantage.
The shootout was settled by the goalkeepers as Gabaski who is known for his penalty saving skewed his kick while Lionel Mpasi scored to send DR Congo through to the quarter finals.
The Leopards will face Guinea in the quarterfinals.
