Cameroon coach Rigobert Song has defended their exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations at the expense of Nigeria by stating he had a young squad that is in a learning process.
In the round of 16 fixture at t the Felix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan, Ademola Lookman was the hero for the Super Eagles as he notched a double to send the Indomitable Lions out of the tournament and reach the quarter-finals.
Victor Osimhen pounced on a defensive mistake to set up Lookman for the opener before Cameroon failed to deal with Nigeria’s intensity and conceded again just before full time when Lookman latched onto his own through ball before slotting home to make it 2-0.
”We had the youngest team; there are players who are discovering. We allowed the opponent to put us in difficulty; it’s part of the game. As I’ve said before, we are in reconstruction,” said Song after the game.
“It’s by making these mistakes that we will grow. Football is like that. The AFCON is a competition that is played on all levels: technical, tactical, and especially mental. I have a youthful team that is discovering; it played, and we still have a lot to learn.”
The result sent Nigeria into a quarters clash against Angola, while Cameroon exited at the last 16 stages.
