AFCON AFCON 2023: My knowledge of Egypt football helped DR Congo to victory – Desabre

Sebastien Desabre

DR Congo head coach Sebastien Desabre believes is understanding of Egyptian football helped his side to win the Round of 16 fixture of the Africa Cup of Nations at Stade Laurent Pokou on Sunday.

The Leopards advanced to the quarter-finals of the 2023 tournament at the expense of the Pharaohs following a 8-7 penalty shootout victory after the two sides had tied 1-1 in normal and extra time.

Desabre has previously coached in Egypt and speaking after the game he said: “I’m very proud of my players. We had a strategy in place to contain this team, but we played too low in the first half. I changed it afterwards and we played better. We suffered, but I think Egypt did too.

“My knowledge of Egyptian football probably helped us. They’re a good team but we were better today. Mentally, I think we were very strong. Now we’ll try to recover well and then we’ll take it match after match, starting with Guinea, our next opponent.”

Desabre’s men will now face Guinea in the last eight.
