AFCON AFCON 2023: Equatorial Guinea captain Emilio Nsue quits international football

Equatorial Guinea’s Emilo Nsue, the leading goal scorer at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, has announced his retirement from international football.

Nsue’s retirement from the Equatorial Guinea national team comes after he was suspended by the country’s football authority for misconduct. Equatorial Guinea’s vice president, Teodora Nguema confirmed on Tuesday night the retirement of the 34-year-old.

Nguema said: “After discussions, captain Emilio Nsue López has declared his retirement from the national team. I acknowledge his contributions over the 12 years he has represented the Nzalang Nacional and wish him success in his future endeavours.”

Nsue, who captained and finished as the top scorer in the AFCON 2023 tournament for Equatorial Guinea by scoring five goals, was recently suspended indefinitely by the Equatorial Guinea FA for alleging that the Equatorial Guinea FA has been embezzling funds meant for football.

Emilio Nsue Lopez, born in Palma de Mallorca to a Spanish mother and an Equatoguinean father, represented Spain at the Youth level as he played for the Spanish U16, U17, U19, U20 and U21 between 2005 and 2011. The right-back cum forward decided to switch to play for the land of his father in 2013 and went ahead to play 43 times and score 22 goals for Equatorial Guinea.

The Intercity right-back, who has played for Mallorca, Real Sociedad, Middlesborough, Birmingham, Apoel and many other teams has decided to retire from international football.
