UEFA Champions League UCL: De Jong, Pedri To Miss Napoli Game

Barcelona’s midfielders Frenkie de Jong and Pedri are anticipated to miss the Champions League match against Napoli, as the Spanish team announced on Monday that the players sustained injuries during Liga play over the weekend.

In Sunday’s goalless draw against Athletic Bilbao, Dutch international De Jong sprained his right ankle while Spaniard Pedri sustained a fresh injury to his right hamstring.

The length of the duo’s absence was not disclosed by Barca, but it’s possible that they’ll be out for more than a month, missing next week’s Champions League second-leg match against Napoli.

On March 12, the current Italian champions will play the five-time European champions. The tie is evenly matched following a 1-1 draw in the first leg.

De Jong suffered a right ankle injury early in the season, which kept him out of action, while Pedri has been dealing with right thigh issues—this one being his third of the year.

Additionally, Pedri is anticipated to miss Spain’s international friendlies against Brazil at Santiago Bernabeu four days later and Colombia in London on March 22.

“They are two very influential players in our game, two very important players.

“We will miss them,” said their coach, Xavi Hernandez, on Sunday after the third-placed Catalans missed the chance to go second.
