England FA Cup: Chelsea score two late goals to secure semi-final spot

Chelsea secured a place in the semi-finals of the FA Cup after goals in second-half stoppage time from Carney Chukwuemeka and Noni Madueke secured a dramatic 4-2 victory over Leicester City at Stamford Bridge.

In a back-and-forth cup tie, the Blues had opened up a two-goal advantage by the interval after goals from Marc Cucurella and Cole Palmer. Yet Leicester mounted a second-half fightback and were level after an own goal from Axel Disasi and a stunning solo strike from Stephy Mavididi.Leicester were reduced to ten men with 17 minutes to play – Callum Doyle saw red for tripping Nicolas Jackson – and it swung momentum in our favour. However, extra time loomed as the game entered its final minutes.

Cue Chukwuemeka. Introduced as a substitute, the midfielder exchanged passes with Palmer and coolly fired home. Those inside Stamford Bridge were jubilant – and there was still time for the Blues to add a fine fourth from Madueke, who curled home from distance to guarantee our place at Wembley in the last four.

Two changes were made to the Chelsea side by Mauricio Pochettino. One was enforced due to Enzo Fernandez’s suspension – Mykhailo Mudryk started –and the other saw Rob Sanchez start in goal ahead of Djordje Petrovic.

The opening 45 minutes saw several chances created by both sides. The first went to Leicester, a back-post volley from Harry Winks that went wide, the second was for Chelsea. A corner was whipped to the near post and Palmer’s flick caused a goalmouth scramble that Leicester were able to clear.
