Premier League Brentford Dents Man United Champions League Slot Chase

Kristoffer Ajer’s equaliser in the 99th minute of Manchester United’s Premier League match against lowly Brentford on Saturday dented the visitors hope of making it into the Champions League for the next season.

After Brentford had dominated the game, Mason Mount, a substitute, felt he had handed United an unexpected and dramatic victory when he tapped home in the 96th minute.

However, three minutes later, Ajer scored a close-range header from Ivan Toney’s cut-back to deny United the victory and drop them to sixth place, 11 points behind fourth-place Aston Villa.

They are also eight points behind fifth-place Tottenham Hotspur, which may be sufficient for Champions League play the following year.

Villa has more games played than both United and Spurs combined.

The first half saw the Bees dominate, hitting the woodwork twice through Toney and Mathias Jorgensen and creating numerous more scoring opportunities but failing to convert any of them.

United made a little comeback after the interval, and goalie Mark Flekken’s solid glove kept Rasmus Hojland from scoring for the seventh straight league game.

Brentford kept producing chances; Bryan Mbeumo volleyed against the crossbar and Toney had a goal disallowed for offside, but neither player was able to take advantage of them.

In extended time, the score remained tied until Mason Mount’s goal from substitute, Casemiro pass broke the deadlock as the former Chelsea player scored his first goal for United, firing past Flekken.

With a sardonic smirk on his face, Brentford manager Thomas Frank stood startled on the sidelines, presumably certain that United had won the match in the final seconds.

But, Norway defender Ajer’s striker’s finish ensured the hosts had something to gain from the match, giving Brentford the equaliser their performance deserved.
