Kenya’s Harambee Stars will host their 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against Burundi and the new Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions Ivory Coast away from home, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) confirmed yesterday (Tuesday).
Kenya will first host Burundi in matchday three and Ivory Coast in matchday four at Bingu Stadium in Malawi. The decision to move the matches to Malawi was necessitated by the fact the East African nation does not have a standard stadium approved by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) with Kasarani and Nyayo Stadiums currently undergoing renovation.
The two venues are being refurbished in readiness to host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The two tournaments will be co-hosted by neighbours Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Confirming the development, FKF CEO Barry Otieno told Africa Top Sports: “We have indeed settled for Malawi to host our next World Cup qualifiers against Burundi and Ivory Coast, the matches will be played at Bingu Stadium.”
