Kenya Gor Mahia smash Muhoroni Youth to lift a record 21st FKF title

Gor Mahia bagged a record 21st Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League title with three games to spare following a resounding 3-0 victory against relegation-threatened Muhoroni Youth at the SportPesa Arena on Sunday.

K’Ogalo went into the game knowing victory could be enough for them to successfully defend the title they clinched from the previous campaign, but they had to wait until the 38th minute when lead striker Benson Omalla, made amends from a missed penalty to score the opener for a 1-0 lead at the half-time break.

Three minutes after resumption, Boniface Omondi struck home the second before midfield star Austin Odhiambo uncorked the celebration champagne with a beautifully taken effort in the 65th minute and leave the visiting side fighting for relegation at the basement.

The victory saw K’Ogalo stay top of the 18-team table with 67 points, but they still have to face Sofapaka, FC Talanta and Bidco United to conclude the season. Meanwhile, on Saturday, Tusker ended Kenya Police’s slim hopes of winning their maiden title following a hard-fought 1-0 victory at the new Dandora Stadium on Saturday.

The law enforcers were the closest challengers to reigning champions Gor Mahia during most of the second round of the top-flight after early pacesetters Posta Rangers and Bandari FC fell by the wayside, and they had gone for 12 undefeated matches in all competitions to keep K’Ogalo in close check.

However, after losing their amazing run to AFC Leopards by a solitary goal last weekend, Police under Salim Babu needed to bounce back to keep alive their slim hopes of lifting the trophy at the end of the season against the Brewers but it was not the case as they suffered their second straight defeat, but their seventh overall of the campaign, to drop off the title race and give K’Ogalo the much-needed breathing space.
