Kenya Sofapaka not aware coach ‘Zico’ has joined Gor Mahia – Elly Kalekwa

Sofapaka President Elly Kalekwa expressed his shock following news that Gor Mahia have hired the services of his coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno.

While unveiling 47-year-old Brazilian Leonardo Martins Neiva to take charge on Monday, the record champions further confirmed the appointment of Otieno for the assistant coaching role alongside Michael Nam.

However, Batoto ba Mungu owner Kalekwa clained they were shocked seeing Otieno being unveiled by Gor Mahia whereas he still had a contract with the 2009 champions.

“We were shocked by the turn of events seeing Otieno being paraded as one of the coaches for Gor Mahia, it came as a shock to the club because Otieno has a one-year contract which is still running,” Kalekwa told People Sports.

“The one year contract was yet to conclude so I don’t know what criteria they used to hire him, I don’t know what Otieno thought to sign for them, we are in shock about the news and were not prior to it.”

Asked who will be in charge of the team against Naivas, Kalekwa said: “Ezekiel (Akwana) will take charge, he has been his deputy and we hope he will stick with the team’s recent playing style because it will be a crucial game for us “

Sofapaka are currently preparing for their FKFPL/NSL promotion/relegation playoffs fixture against Naivas. Sofapaka and Naivas will face off in the first leg on Saturday, 6 July 2024, before they clash again in the return leg on Sunday, 14 July 2024.

Sofapaka found themselves in the playoffs following their 16th-place finish in the league, two spots above the relegation slot. They finished the season with 36 points to hand themselves a lifeline while Muhoroni Youth and Nzoia Sugar were axed to the lower division.
