Dubem Amene, an American-born Nigerian champion, has declared his retirement from athletics at the age of 21 following the disqualification of the men’s 4x400m relay squad from the Paris 2024 Olympic final.
Amene, along with Ifeanyi Ojeli, Ezekiel Nathaniel, and Chidi Okezie, qualified for the 4x400m final by finishing second in heat 2 with a Season’s Best time of 2:59.81.
Unfortunately, their euphoria was short-lived as they were disqualified from running in the final due to an adjudicated lane infringement by Ojeli, who raced the first leg before passing the baton to Nathan.

Following the tragic news, Amene, who won the national title at the Nigerian Olympic trials in Benin earlier this year, revealed that he will be leaving the sport to pursue a career in finance now that he has accomplished his lifelong desire of becoming an Olympian.
The 21-year-old graduated from the University of Michigan in June with an Economics degree and will now enter the employment.
