African players abroad Ex-Arsenal star Mohamed Elneny voted man of the match in Al-Jazira debut

Egypt international Mohamed Elneny won the Man of the Match award on his Al-Jazira debut as they beat Al-Bataeh 3-1 in the UAE League Cup.

The 32-year-old moved to the UAE after his contract with Arsenal expired to put an end to his eight-season spell in North London.

Elneny impressed in Paris as he led the Pharaohs to fourth place in the football event, before continuing his excellent performance with a MOTM display against Al-Bataeh.

Goals from Ramon Mierez and Neeskens Kebano put Al-Jazira 2-0 up in the opening 25 minutes, before Anatole Abang’s strike pulled one back for the visitors.A 64th-minute goal from Mamadou Coulibaly ensured a win for Al-Jazira ahead of the return leg set to be played on September 8.

Mohamed Elneny’s performance earned him the Man of the Match award, which the Egyptian said about: “This is the first match, and winning is the most important thing. Winning the Man of the Match award gives me a big boost for the upcoming games.”
