FIFA U20 WORLD CUP FIFA U20 WWC: Falconets Fall To Germany In Second Group Game

In their second Group D game of the ongoing 2024 FIFA Under 20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia, Germany defeated Nigeria’s U20 women’s football team, the Falconets, 1-3, Wednesday night.

Germany is the squad’s past runner-up. In Bogota, Colombia, the game was held at the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo.

The Nigerian girls were unable to match the German team’s speed during the match. Germany now lead the group with six points from two games after the victory, while Nigeria, who defeated South Korea on matchday one, is in second place with three points.

Germany took the lead thanks to a defensive blunder by the Nigerian team as Sehitler Alara scored in the 17th minute.

The Falconets, who had trouble establishing themselves in the first half, improved in the second and Chiamaka Okwuchukwu tied the score in the 50th minute.

But Germany rallied quickly, and in the 61st minute Sofie Zdebel finished with precision to give the Germans the lead.

The Video Assistant Referee also disallowed a goal for the Falconets.

Nigeria made a strong effort to draw even, but their hopes were short-lived as Germany’s third goal, scored by Sarah Ernst, sealed the victory for the reigning champions.

Germany remains unbeaten after two games thanks to the outcome, while Nigeria now faces a more difficult road to Round of 16 qualification.
