AFCON AFCON 2025: Uganda continue impressive start after defeating Congo Brazzaville

Uganda continued with their impressive start in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers after defeating Congo Brazzaville 2-0 at Mandela National Stadium on Monday.

After a host of missed chances, the Cranes under Paul Put were forced to wait until the 21st minute when Aziz Kayondo found the back of the net with a beautifully taken effort.

Kayondo scored a great goal as he attempted a cross from the left flank, but the curve of the ball crossed in and went inside the far post.

Jude Ssemugabi then doubled Cranes lead in the 85th minute to ensure they moved four points in the group on matchday two.

In the 44th minute, Uganda made a substitution; Jude Ssenmugabi replacing Muhammad Shaban but despite the home team dominatimg most part of the first half, the game went into the break with the Cranes leading 1-0.

At the start of the second half, Congo made two changes with Prestige Mboungou and Beni Makouana replacing Mons Bassouamina and Antoine Makoumbou.

In the 60th Denis Omedi, who had scored a brilliant goal against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in their 2-2 Group opener, was yellow carded for a clumsy challenge.
