Africa Soccer Stephen Appiah Criticizes Ghana’s Decision to Play Qualifiers Outside the Country

Former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah has voiced his frustration over Ghana’s national football team playing its crucial qualifiers outside the country. The football legend, known for his leadership both on and off the pitch, took to X(Twitter) to express his concerns, calling the situation a “national embarrassment.”

In his tweet, Appiah stated, “Playing a qualifier outside Ghana, except in a tournament, is a national embarrassment. We must prioritize hosting our own games and protect our football pride.” His words echo a sentiment that has been growing among fans and stakeholders of Ghanaian football, as the country continues to face challenges in hosting home games due to bad pitches in the country.

This controversy stems from issues with stadium infrastructure and other logistical challenges that have led to CAF withdrawing the usage of the only approved pitch in Ghana and have directed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to opt for venues in other countries to host the country’s crucial international fixtures. For many fans, playing on foreign soil robs the team of the home advantage and deprives local supporters of the chance to rally behind their team.

Appiah’s remarks have sparked widespread debate. His statement has been met with support from some quarters, particularly from football enthusiasts who share his concern about the diminishing pride in Ghana’s football legacy. Many agree that hosting qualifiers on home soil not only gives the team an advantage but also strengthens the bond between the team and its fans and that is why the National Sport Authority should have ensured a proper maintenance of the pitches.

Appiah, a revered figure in Ghanaian football, has long been a vocal advocate for the growth and development of the sport in the country. His latest comments reflect his deep-rooted commitment to ensuring that Ghana remains a formidable force in international football, both on and off the field.
