In their first league match of the new season, Mamelodi Sundowns maintained their winning streak as the reigning champions defeated SuperSport United 2-0 in their opening match of the 2024–25 Betway Premiership on Tuesday.

Sundowns, the defending league champions, have won the last six of their seven season-opening games to avoid defeat.

With goals from Lucas Ribeiro and Iqraam Rayners in the second half of Tuesday’s match at Loftus Versfeld, Sundowns has now won every league game since the 2019–20 season began, including their opening matchup against SuperSport.

Since the Premier Soccer League’s founding 29 years ago, the reigning champions have won 16 of the 28 times they have played in the season’s opening game.

The reigning champions have suffered five defeats and seven draws.
