Kenya’s Harambee Stars made a remarkable reap after moving six places up in the latest FIFA world rankings released on Thursday.
The East African nation are now sitting at position 102 after gaining eleven points to increase their points build-up from 1,197 to 1,208 points.
The latest achievement could be attributed to the team’s recent display at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, where they played two matches against Zimbabwe and Namibia on September 6 and 10 respectively.
Kenya under head coach Engin Firat opened their Group J qualifying campaign against the Warriors, whom they drew 0-0 at Nelson Mandela Stadium in Uganda before recovering to beat the Brave Warriors 2-1 at Orlando Stadium in South Africa in their matchday two.
Against Namibia, Kenya needed two second half goals courtesy of striker John Avire and midfielder Duke Abuya to win the game and move top of Group J with four points, the same number of points as Cameroon, who beat Namibia 1-0 in their opener before drawing 0-0 against Zimbabwe.
Kenya will now prepare to face Cameroon in a back-to-back fixture of the AFCON qualifiers. The first meeting will be played away in Cameroon on October 15 before they face off again at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Uganda on October 15.
Morocco’s Atlas Lions maintained its 14th position, solidifying its standing as the top-ranked African team, while Senegal dropped two places to 21st. Argentina, France, and Spain have retained their positions at the summit of the world rankings.
