With a goal from Christian Eriksen cancelled out by a strike from Dutchman Sam Lammers, Manchester United’s Europa League season started with a 1-1 draw against FC Twente at a soggy Old Trafford on Wednesday.

An early shot by Lammers of Twente slid beyond the post during a frenetic first half.

A stunning curling strike into the top corner from inside the area gave Eriksen the lead for United ten minutes before halftime.

After Lammers’ strong finish past United custodian Andre Onana at the near post in the 68th minute, Twente pulled even.

Moments later, Joshua Zirkzee attempted to put United ahead once more, but Twente custodian Lars Unnerstall made a save to deny him.

In the closing minutes, Bruno Fernandes nearly put United ahead with a looping drive into the top corner, but the hosts were unable to penetrate Twente’s deep-lying defence, which appeared happy to settle for an away draw.
