Stellenbosch delivered an outstanding performance decisively defeating Cape Town City 3-0 in the Western Cape derby at Athlone Stadium.
Steve Barker’s squad have now won six of the last nine encounters between the sides with City’s last win coming in 2020.
On a chilly evening in Athlone, Stellenbosch found themselves technically in enemy territory, as they are still unable to host matches at Danie Craven Stadium.
Five minutes before halftime, Amadou Soukouna had a free-kick opportunity but sent his effort soaring over the bar. Just before the whistle, the deadlock was finally broken when Stellenbosch capitalized on a defensive error, with Andre De Jong scoring from distance to put his team ahead 1-0.
The second half saw a moment of brilliance from Fawaaz Basadien, who doubled Stellenbosch’s lead in the 54th minute with a stunning shot from just inside his own half that sailed over Keet, who managed to get a hand to it but could not prevent it going in.
City responded with a half-chance, but Basadien continued to shine, forcing Keet into another save moments later. In the 61st minute, Sanele Barns extended the lead to 3-0, heading in a well-placed cross.
