FIFA U17 WORLD CUP Kenya’s Junior Starlets Hold Portugal to a draw in another Friendly Match

The Junior Starlets played to a 1-1 draw against Portugal in their friendly match held on Friday, September 27, 2024, at the Albir Grounds.

Portugal took an early lead in the 24th minute through a penalty. Despite several attempts by the Junior Starlets to break down Portugal’s defense, the first half ended with the Portuguese holding a 1-0 lead.

In the second half, changes were made to inject energy into the game. Joan Ogola and Susan Akoth came on for Lorna Faith and Lindey Weey Atieno in the 58th minute, setting the stage for the Starlets’ equaliser.

A smooth build-up play began with Susan Akoth, who passed to Marion Serenge. Serenge then fed Valerie Nekesa, who made a precise penetrating pass to Joan Ogola, who calmly slotted home the equaliser in the 60th minute.

Despite numerous attempts by the Junior Starlets to grab the lead, the match ended in a 1-1 stalemate.Up next for the Junior Starlets is a friendly against Intercity on September 30, as they continue their preparations for the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.

These friendly games are vital for sharpening tactics and building match fitness ahead of the team’s World Cup debut in the Dominican Republic, which begins on October 16, 2024, and runs until November 3, 2024.

The Junior Starlets will face England on October 18, Korea DPR on October 20, and conclude their group stage matches against Mexico on October 24.
