Coastal Union finally tasted victory in the Mainland Premier League, triumphing 2-0 over the newly promoted side – Pamba Jiji at Azam Complex in Dar es Salaam on Sunday.
The win marked a significant turnaround for Coastal Union, who had endured a disheartening start to the season, suffering four consecutive losses after a promising draw with Kinondoni Municipal Council (KMC) in their opening match.
The game was pivotal for Coastal Union, who had been languishing near the bottom of the league table, after a string of disappointing results; 1-0 defeat to Mashujaa, 2-0 loss against Namungo, a narrow 1-0 setback against Azam and a 2-1 defeat to JKT Tanzania.
With this win, Coastal Union now sit in 12th place, hoping to build momentum as they strive for better standings. The turning point came in the second half, with John Makwata opening the scoring in the 49th minute.
His goal stemmed from a set-piece that exploited a moment of defensive miscommunication from Pamba Jiji. Coastal Union’s relentless pressure forced Pamba to errors, allowing Makwata to capitalise and send the fans into jubilation.
Just seven minutes later, the celebrations continued as Maabad Maulid Maabad doubled the lead. Another set-piece situation unfolded, where the Pamba Jiji defences faltered again, leading to a well-timed volley from Maabad that left the goalkeeper with little chance.
The exuberance among Coastal Union players was palpable, reflecting their relief and joy after a tough beginning to the season.
