Wojciech Szczęsny’s retirement from sport did not last long. A month after his announcement, the Polish goalkeeper is back in action. He has just signed with FC Barcelona for a stint to cover Marc-André ter Stegen’s long-term injury.
The Pole did not expect to one day wear the Barça jersey, and for good reason. He announced his retirement from the sport on August 27, once his contract with Juventus ended.
But to see Szczęsny in action, we will probably have to wait a few weeks. The goalkeeper has not played since Poland’s 2nd match at the Euro this summer (against Austria) and he will have to get back into decent physical condition.
He will also have to face competition from Iñaki Peña. While waiting for his new rival to get back into shape, the Spaniard has been thrust into the starting line-up and did not really shine against Osasuna, resulting in a heavy defeat (4-2). The arrival of Szczęsny will therefore bring competition, which is rather good news.
