Dstv Premiership Relebohile Mofokeng reaches landmark with Orlando Pirates after MTN8 success

Relebohile Mofokeng, continues to blaze his trail of success after delivering a game-changing performance in the MTN8 final over the weekend.

Coming off the bench, the 19-year-old played a pivotal role in both of Pirates’ goals, providing an assist and netting one himself, as Orlando Pirates staged a thrilling 3-1 comeback victory over Stellenbosch FC.

This victory was a historic one for the Buccaneers as they became the first club in the Premier Soccer League era to win the MTN8 Cup three years in a row.

However, while the club made headlines for its record-breaking feat, Mofokeng was quietly scripting his own chapter of history. Rele marked his 50th official appearance for the Mighty Buccaneers during the final at a sold-out Moses Mabhida Stadium.

This milestone is particularly remarkable given that he was only promoted to the senior team last year, and his impact has been nothing short of sensational. In those 50 appearances, he has amassed 19 goal contributions (9 goals and 10 assists).

The baby-faced assassin or, as some might say more aptly, the “president of ama2000,” has rapidly established himself as a regular under coach José Riveiro. At just 19, he already boasts two MTN8 and two Nedbank Cup gold medals in his personal trophy cabinet.

As well as being voted DStv Premiership Young Player of the Season and the Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player of the Tournament last season.

Mofokeng’s accomplishments extend beyond club football. With three Bafana Bafana caps already under his belt, the prodigy has recently earned a place in Hugo Broos’ 23-man squad for the upcoming 2025 AFCON Qualifiers against Congo Brazzaville.

The first leg will take place at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha on Friday, October 11, with the away fixture scheduled for Tuesday, October 15.

Mofokeng’s meteoric rise is a testament to his talent, work ethic, and dedication to the game. With his 20 year birthday just a few weeks away, the future looks incredibly bright for the young man as he continues to etch his name in South African football history.
