CAF Champions League CAFCL: Sundowns Stun Maniema Union with Dramatic Late Winner

Mamelodi Sundowns pulled off a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory against Maniema Union, securing a crucial three points with a last-minute own goal in their CAF Champions League group stage clash. The thrilling encounter kept fans on the edge of their seats, as both sides fought for supremacy in a match filled with twists and high stakes.

Maniema Union struck first in the 38th minute when Moanda, combining precision and vision, delivered a perfect assist to Kitambala. The forward made no mistake, slotting the ball past the Sundowns’ goalkeeper to give the home side a 1-0 lead. The first half ended with Maniema Union in control, while Sundowns struggled to find their rhythm.

The second half saw a transformed Sundowns side as they piled on the pressure, determined to salvage a result. Their persistence finally bore fruit in the 83rd minute. Teboho Mokoena delivered a pinpoint assist to Peter Shalulile, who calmly finished to level the score at 1-1, reigniting hope for the South African champions.

However, Sundowns were not content with just a point. With the clock ticking down, they continued to press for a winner. In the dying moments of the match, a dangerous cross aimed for Shalulile caused havoc in the Maniema Union defense. Moanda, attempting to clear the ball under immense pressure, inadvertently turned it into his own net, handing Sundowns the lead in heartbreaking fashion for the home side.

The 2-1 victory was a testament to Sundowns’ resilience and fighting spirit. The result places them in a strong position going into the final match of the group stage. Sundowns now occupy second place in the group with 8 points, behind FAR Rabat, who hold a slender advantage on goal difference and have a game in hand.

For Maniema Union, it was a bitter defeat, marked by Moanda’s unfortunate own goal that overshadowed his earlier contribution. Sundowns, meanwhile, will carry the momentum from this dramatic win as they look to secure qualification in their final group stage encounter.
