FA Cup Man United Send Arsenal Packing From FA Cup

The tense FA Cup third-round match between Manchester United and Arsenal ended 1-1 after extra time on Sunday at the Emirates Stadium, with Joshua Zirkzee scoring the game-winning penalty for the 10-man team.

Kai Havertz of Arsenal was the only one of the first four penalty takers to miss after Altay Bayindir made an incredible save.

Zirkzee, who was jeered off after Newcastle United’s loss last month, then took over to win the shootout 5-3.

After a lacklustre first half, United took the lead in the 52nd minute thanks to a fantastic run by Alejandro Garnacho and a curling effort from Bruno Fernandes just inside the area.

However, ten minutes later, United’s Diogo Dalot, who had already been sent out for a dangerous charge on Myles Lewis-Skelly, was shown a second yellow card for a reckless tackle on Mikel Merino, turning the tide of the match.

The Gunners gained control of the match two minutes later when Gabriel’s shot deflected wickedly off Matthijs de Ligt and in after Bayindir’s ill-fated attempt at a punch dropped at his feet.

After Havertz went down under little contact from Harry Maguire, Arsenal was given a dubious penalty, which would have completed the comeback.

However, in the 72nd minute, Bayindir made an incredible save against Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard following a brief altercation that resulted in the booking of Maguire, Havertz, and Gabriel.

As United sat deeper and deeper, the Gunners tried to use their numerical advantage, with substitute Declan Rice going straight at Bayindir as he went unmarked.

Then, late in the game, Havertz missed a fantastic opportunity by cutting badly wide from close range, and Bayindir again made a stop against Rice to guarantee another half hour.

As United held on, De Ligt displayed two brilliant moments in extra time, first stopping a Rice attempt and then stopping Leandro Trossard from firing from two yards out.

David Raya narrowly missed Zirkzee’s goalbound attempt in the second extra time period, giving United a chance to win an unusual match.

However, the defending champions, United, who won their 13th FA Cup with penalties against Coventry City in the previous year’s semi-final, won the shootout.

Sunday’s win indicates United may have turned a corner despite a challenging start for new manager Ruben Amorim, who lost his first league game as United coach at Arsenal last month.

Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, was left to lament his team’s failure to score.
