African players abroad Arsenal’s Striker Debate Reignited: Richards Urges Move for Osimhen

Following Arsenal’s defeats to Manchester United, Mikel Arteta’s side has shown the glaring absence of a consistent and prolific number nine and has reignited debates among fans and pundits alike.

Former England international and pundit Micah Richards has added fuel to the fire by suggesting that Arsenal should seriously consider Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen to solve their attacking woes. Speaking on a football analysis show, Richards emphasized the importance of securing a “proper” number nine to elevate Arsenal’s title ambitions.

“It’s hard to go out and get a number nine. There’s not that many in world football,” Richards explained. “The one I looked at in the short term was [Victor] Osimhen. With the problems he has had at Napoli, he has been allowed to go out on loan in Turkey. He is a proven goalscorer at that level, and in the Champions League as well.”

Richards’ comments have sparked widespread discussion among Arsenal fans, many of whom are frustrated with the team’s inability to capitalize on goal-scoring opportunities. Gabriel Jesus, while a dynamic presence up front, has struggled with injuries and consistency. Eddie Nketiah and Leandro Trossard, though capable, lack the imposing physicality and instinctive finishing of an elite striker.

However, the potential acquisition of Osimhen would not come without its challenges. Napoli, despite their recent willingness to send the Nigerian out on loan, are known for their tough negotiating stance. Osimhen’s market value remains high, and Arsenal would likely have to break their transfer record to secure his services.

As Arsenal continue to chase success on multiple fronts, the debate surrounding their need for a top-tier number nine is unlikely to fade anytime soon. Whether the club heeds Richards’ advice and moves for Osimhen remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the Gunners’ ambitions hinge on finding a consistent goal-scoring solution.
