Madrid media praise Mbappé amid harsh criticism

Real Madrid suffered a humiliating 5-2 defeat against FC Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final, their second loss to their rivals this season.

Despite playing with a numerical advantage for much of the second half, the Merengues were outclassed, drawing heavy criticism from fans and the Madrid press.

While most players faced scathing reviews, Kylian Mbappé was singled out for praise. The French forward opened the scoring with a brilliant goal and remained a constant threat, even after sustaining an ankle injury early in the game. Spanish daily AS highlighted his performance as the only positive takeaway, describing Mbappé as “heavenly on one of Real Madrid’s darkest nights.”

Mbappé’s individual brilliance starkly contrasted with the lackluster efforts of his teammates. Awarded a 7/10 by Marca, the highest rating among Real players, he was commended for his relentless attempts to spark life into the game. Coach Carlo Ancelotti echoed this sentiment, admitting post-match, “I only keep Mbappé from today’s match; we forget the rest.” While the defeat leaves Real Madrid empty-handed, the Frenchman can take some solace in knowing he delivered on the night, even if the rest of the team fell far short of expectations.
