Football Austin Okocha Calls for Reform in Nigerian Football Administration

Former Super Eagles captain Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has delivered a scathing critique of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), calling for sweeping reforms to revive the fortunes of the national team. In a passionate statement, Okocha emphasized that the Super Eagles may struggle to win any major trophies under the current administration, citing a lack of genuine football expertise and dedication among the officials.

“The Super Eagles may not win any trophy until the current NFF officials are dissolved or reformed,” Okocha said. “Appoint new officials who know more about football, who have interest in football, who love football, whose lifestyles represent football. You can’t appoint politicians to manage football.”

Okocha, widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s greatest players, expressed frustration over the state of football governance in the country. He lamented the appointment of individuals who, in his view, prioritize personal or political interests over the growth and success of the sport.

“Football is the only tie that keeps Nigeria going as one,” he added. “It is our only source of joy.”

The former captain’s comments come amid a challenging period for Nigerian football, with the Super Eagles failing to achieve consistent success in recent tournaments. Fans and analysts have often pointed to administrative mismanagement as a key factor behind the team’s struggles, and Okocha’s remarks add weight to the growing calls for change.

Okocha’s suggestions for reform include appointing officials who are deeply connected to the game and share a passion for its development. “We need leaders who understand what football means to Nigerians,” he said. “It’s not just a sport; it’s a unifying force, a source of hope.”
