Newly appointed Sports and Recreation Minister-designate, Kofi Adams, has outlined his vision for revitalizing the sports sector in Ghana, with a focus on securing sustainable funding and ensuring equitable development across all sporting disciplines.
Speaking during an interview, Kofi Adams revealed his intention to collaborate with the Minister for Education to unlock funding opportunities through the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to support school sports. “Sports is a lucky sector, but it has been failing to attract the right funding. By working with the Education Ministry, we aim to channel resources from GETFund to develop sports at the grassroots level, especially in schools,” he stated.
Adams stressed the importance of fostering a culture of sportsmanship and competition among young Ghanaians, emphasizing that early investment in school sports would serve as a foundation for future national success.
Beyond football, which often dominates the Ghanaian sporting landscape, Adams pledged to promote other disciplines to ensure inclusivity and growth across the board. “Sports is not just football. We will develop other disciplines too,” he assured. This commitment to a balanced approach is expected to resonate with athletes and stakeholders from underrepresented sports.
During the conversation, Adams also shared a personal anecdote about his passion for local football, revealing that he grew up as an ardent supporter of Asante Kotoko. “I supported Asante Kotoko growing up so I could oppose my dad, a Hearts of Oak fan,” he said with a smile, offering a glimpse of his deep-rooted connection to Ghanaian football.
The Sports Minister-designate’s plans signal a promising future for sports in Ghana, as he seeks to blend passion with policy to drive progress. Stakeholders and fans alike will be keenly watching how his strategies unfold, especially his efforts to secure funding and develop a more diverse and inclusive sports ecosystem.
