UEFA considering scrapping extra time in European competitions

UEFA is reportedly exploring a major change in European football by eliminating extra time in cup competitions, according to The Guardian.

With increasing concerns over player fatigue due to congested schedules, discussions have taken place—albeit informally—about sending matches straight to penalties after 90 minutes. While no formal proposal has been made yet, the potential change aims to reduce match duration and prevent further physical strain on players.

This reform could benefit smaller clubs, who often struggle against wealthier teams with deeper squads, as well as broadcasters looking to maintain consistent TV schedules.

However, any concrete decision is unlikely before 2027, as UEFA remains bound by its current television rights agreements. While this idea could revolutionize European football, it remains to be seen whether UEFA will take steps to implement it in the coming years.
