Top News Semi-Automated Offside Technology To Debut In FA Cup Fifth around

The FA announced Thursday that seven FA Cup fifth round matches, which will take place in Premier League stadiums next month, will be the first to use semi-automated offside technology in English football.

Of the eight fifth round matches, the Preston North End-Burnley match is the only one that does not feature a Premier League team.

Although testing was supposed to be completed before Christmas, the technology encountered issues.

The new technology will be introduced in the Emirates FA Cup fifth round … following an extensive testing period that has taken place during the 2024-25 season,” the FA said in a statement.

“Following successful live operation in the Emirates FA Cup, the Premier League will look to implement the system later this season.

“Semi-Automated Offside Technology will provide more efficient placement of the virtual offside line, based on optical player tracking, and produce virtual graphics to ensure an enhanced in-stadium and broadcast experience for supporters.”

Assistant for Videos Along with VAR announcements, which allow referees to give supporters and viewers an explanation of their final judgement, referees will also be available during all eight FA Cup fifth round matches.

The prior rounds did not use VAR.

Harry Maguire’s late goal, which looked to be offside but the linesman did not raise his flag, gave Manchester United a 2-1 victory over Leicester City in the fourth round.

Four all-Premier League matches will be among the FA Cup fifth round fixtures, which will take place over the weekend of March 1.
