After Thursday’s group stage draw for the Africa U20 Cup of Nations, which will be held in Cote d’Ivoire from April 26 to May 18, Flying Eagles head coach Aliyu Zubairu expressed his optimism.
Alongside traditional powerhouses Morocco, Egypt, and South Africa—all of which have a lengthy history in African youth football—the Nigerian team is in a challenging group.

“It’s a very good draw,” Coach Zubairu said in response to the draw.
“There is no reason to be afraid of any opponent if a team genuinely wants to make it to the FIFA World Cup.
“At this point, facing South Africa, Egypt, and Morocco offers a fantastic opportunity.
“I believe it’s a blessing.”
This viewpoint not only demonstrates Zubairu’s faith in his team’s ability but also his dedication to putting his players up against strong opponents, which can eventually help them grow and become more resilient.
Coach Zubairu emphasised the importance of mental preparation as his team prepares for these crucial games, acknowledging the seriousness of the situation.
He emphasises that his players should treat every opponent with dignity and seriousness and is eager to help them develop a strong sense of self-belief.
“We need to dispel the notion that this is a ‘group of death,’” he said.
“In African football, there are no small teams anymore.
“The key is to prepare very well.
“A lesser-known nation can surprise everyone if they come prepared.”
To ensure the team is adequately prepared for the task, the NFF has not only put the Flying Eagles in camp to resume training, with a 30-man squad, but has also organised a two-match tour of Cairo for the team to play the Egyptian U20 team at the end of this month.
The friendly matches in Cairo have been scheduled for 25th and 27th February.
