Ghana Kwesi Nyantakyi Rules Out Return to Football Administration After Ban

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kwesi Nyantakyi, has ruled out a return to football administration, even after his ban from the sport expires. Nyantakyi, who once held the most powerful position in Ghanaian football and served on international bodies like FIFA and CAF, has stated that he has no intention of returning to mainstream football management.

Speaking in a recent interview, the former football chief expressed his disappointment over the way he was treated following the investigative documentary by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, which led to his downfall. “What they did to me was an attempt to actually kill me,” Nyantakyi said. “While I still have an interest in football, I will not consider returning to mainstream administration for the time being.”

Nyantakyi was at the center of a massive corruption scandal in 2018 after Anas’ Number 12 exposé implicated him in alleged bribery and unethical dealings. The documentary led to his resignation as GFA President and a subsequent lifetime ban by FIFA, which was later reduced to 15 years on appeal.

Once a dominant figure in African football, Nyantakyi played a key role in Ghana’s qualification for multiple FIFA World Cup tournaments and was seen as a powerful figure in CAF and FIFA. However, his abrupt fall from grace reshaped the landscape of Ghanaian football, leading to significant reforms within the GFA.

Despite his disillusionment with the sport’s administration, Nyantakyi has not completely abandoned football. He acknowledged that his passion for the game remains, but insisted that returning to a leadership role is not an option he is considering.

His statement has sparked reactions from football fans and analysts, with some believing that his experience could still benefit Ghanaian football, while others argue that his time in the sport has passed.
