Thomas Tuchel shakes up England squad with bold selections

Newly appointed England manager Thomas Tuchel has unveiled his first squad, making a few bold changes ahead of the Three Lions’ World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Latvia.

The German tactician, who took over from Gareth Southgate in October, has opted for a mix of experience and youthful energy, calling up two uncapped players—Newcastle’s Dan Burn and Arsenal’s promising full-back Myles Lewis-Skelly. In attack, Marcus Rashford makes his return after being left out in Southgate’s final selections, while Jack Grealish is left out due to his underwhelming form at Manchester City.

Alongside the newcomers, three familiar faces are back in the squad. Reece James, who has struggled with injuries at Chelsea, reunites with his former club manager, while Jordan Henderson and Rashford also return to the fold. Tuchel has largely maintained England’s core but introduced fresh competition in several positions. Morgan Rogers, Jarell Quansah, Levi Colwill, Tino Livramento, Eberechi Eze, Curtis Jones, and Anthony Gordon have all been included, signaling the coach’s intent to revitalize the squad with young talent.

Despite the changes, key players remain at the heart of the team. Jordan Pickford retains his spot as the first-choice goalkeeper, with support from Dean Henderson, Aaron Ramsdale, and James Trafford. In midfield, Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer, and Declan Rice will lead the charge, while captain Harry Kane is joined in attack by Phil Foden, Jarrod Bowen, and Dominic Solanke. Tuchel’s first selection reflects a balance between continuity and innovation, as he looks to make his mark on English football.
