Nigeria Premier League Abia Warriors Players Receive Individual Awards

Sunday’s NPFL Matchday 33 match between Abia Warriors and Rivers United at the Umuahia Township Stadium culminated in a flurry of individual player awards, with no fewer than four players taking home various honours.

Samson Obi, who currently plays for Rivers United after playing for Abia Warriors in the 2023–2024 season, was given a special honour for his 21 goals for the Warriors during the previous campaign.

That was not all, Sunday Megwo, who has ten goals this season and is the Abia Warriors’ joint top scorer, was also recognised with the Banana Island Player of the Month title for March.

Emmanuel Ogbuagu was voted Man of the Match in Abia Warriors’ exciting 2-0 victory over Rivers United, while Anthony Ijoma, a striker with 10 goals this campaign, was given the League Bloggers Award for February 2025.

Ogbuagu gave the home team a 1-0 lead at halftime with a 30-yard free kick in the first half that curled into the top corner.

He was named Man of the Match for his spectacular dead-ball strike, which was not overlooked.

“I’m happy that my former club still recognised my contributions last season,” said Obi.

“I’m overwhelmed with this award. I’m humbled. I thank the management, the coaches, players, and supporters who made it possible.”

With 52 points, Obi’s 21 goals helped Abia Warriors place 12th in the league.

The team advanced to the 2024 President Federation Cup final for the first time in their existence, although they were defeated 4-0 by Maiduguri’s El-Kanemi Warriors.
