Wydad Athletic Club has officially terminated the contract of head coach Rulani Mokwena following a series of underwhelming performances. The Moroccan giants announced the decision on Thursday, bringing an early end to what was initially expected to be a long-term project.
Mokwena joined Wydad in July 2024 on a deal set to run until 2027, but just nine months into his tenure, the club has opted for a change after an inconsistent campaign.
During his time at the helm, Mokwena took charge of 35 matches, recording:
- 14 wins
- 14 draws
- 7 defeats
Despite flashes of promise, Wydad struggled to find consistent form under the South African tactician, falling short of the high expectations set by the club’s management and supporters.
In a brief statement, Wydad thanked Mokwena for his service and wished him well in his future endeavors. The club is expected to announce an interim coach in the coming days as they look to stabilize their season.
Mokwena’s departure marks the end of a short but eventful chapter, as the former Mamelodi Sundowns boss now considers his next move on the continental stage.
