Africa Soccer Malawi FA secure landmark sponsorship deal with BetPawa

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has secured a landmark MK389 million sponsorship deal with BetPawa Malawi for the Women’s Football Regional Leagues.

The sponsorship was unveiled on Friday at Sunbird Capital Hotel in Lilongwe. Speaking at the ceremony, BetPawa Regional Manager for Southern and West Africa, Nii Armah Ashong-Katai, emphasised the company’s commitment to supporting the growth of sports across the continent, particularly women’s football.

“We aim to raise the bar in women’s football. This is not just a ceremony—it’s a commitment. We want to support young girls and make this journey unforgettable.

“We explored various sporting disciplines, and once we learned that Malawi was making strides with its Women’s Football, we saw the perfect opportunity to partner with FAM,” he said.

Ashong-Katai added that BetPawa was inspired by the joy players expressed when rewarded financially for their efforts. Also present was Kuwina Limited Country Director, Douglas Kamwendo, who hailed women’s football as Malawi’s proudest sports discipline.

“We have top players plying their trade abroad, and that’s why we’re supporting this initiative. We want to empower female athletes and ensure resources go directly to the players. This sponsorship will drive competition and strengthen our National Team, the Scorchers,” he said.

FAM Vice President Madalitso Kuyera, speaking on behalf of President Haiya, described the sponsorship as a powerful motivator and a turning point for women’s football in Malawi.

“This is more than funding—it’s a sign that the world is watching. We’re grateful to BetPawa for this bold and commendable step. With talents like Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga already making waves internationally, we believe this sponsorship will help nurture even more stars,” said Kuyera.

He also reiterated FAM’s commitment to bringing more sponsors on board and called on league administrators to uphold professionalism to protect the league’s image.

“We’ll ensure BetPawa gets value for their investment. In Malawi’s challenging economic climate, BetPawa’s decision to invest is a sign of passion and dedication to uplifting women’s football,” he said.

The MK389 million sponsorship will run for one year, with potential for extension. It includes MK90 million for club subvention with each of the 30 participating teams getting K3 million each, MK8.7 million for end-of-season awards, and MK17.5 million for league administration.

A total of MK273.24 million will go directly to players and technical staff as match-day rewards under the “Locker Room Bonus” initiative. The winning team of each match will receive MK1,012,000, with 23 players and three technical staff members each earning MK44,000 per game.
