After losing 3-0 to Newcastle United on Saturday, Ipswich Town was demoted from the Premier League.
Ben Johnson was sent off for two yellow cards in the first half, leaving the visitors with just ten men.
With four games remaining, Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich are 15 points behind West Ham United and will return to the Championship after one season in the top division, joining already-relegated Leicester City and bottom-place Southampton.
In the competition for a spot in the Champions League next season, Newcastle’s victory put them in third place with 62 points, five points behind second-place Arsenal and one ahead of Manchester City in fourth.
Newcastle attacked in waves and had a goal disallowed in the 22nd minute when Bruno Guimaraes blocked goalie Alex Palmer, demonstrating the magnitude of the task confronting Ipswich, who needed a win to have any mathematical hope of staying up.
When Johnson received his second yellow card for yanking back Alexander Isak in the 30th minute and was sent off seven minutes later for diving, the visitors’ situation took a turn for the worse.
Sandro Tonali attempted a shot as halftime drew near, but Newcastle eventually took the lead in first-half stoppage time when Isak scored from the penalty spot after Julio Enciso was sent off for bringing down Jacob Murphy.
Dan Burn scored the second goal with a header eleven minutes after the interval, jumping highest to drive the ball home from close range as Newcastle rained crosses and set pieces into the box.
By this point, the 10-man Tractor Boys were barely surviving, but Newcastle’s substitutions of William Osula, Callum Wilson, and Anthony Gordon gave them little reprieve. Two minutes after entering the game, Osula sent Ipswich to the bottom with a soaring header from a corner.
