It was a prosperous outing for Mamelodi Sundowns after they defeated Chippa United in a 3-0 fest on Wednesday night at Loftus Versfeld.
The hosts had set their eyes on goals with plenty of attempts in the opening minutes of the match, but the rearguard of the visitors was airtight, as they denied Masandawana in the spaces. After a back-and-forth between the two sides, the hosts were able to squeeze in a goal in the 30th minute. It came from Khuliso Mudau’s cut-back to Iqraam Rayners, who fired the ball to the back of the net.
Ten minutes later, another goal was seen from the Brazilians to double their advantage. It came from a setpiece where the goalkeeper tried to smack the ball away but he missed it. Jayden Adams found the ball and did not waste time as he struck it into the net. The two goals saw the hosts head to the interval with an advantage.
The second stanza started a bit slow but the Chilli Boys looked more threatening. They kept the ball on Downs half but were just not getting it right. Through their counterpressing, they forced a mistake out of Denis Onyango and struck a shot in front goal, luckily, the effort went wide.
Substitute Lucas Ribeiro missed two opportunities in front of the goal, which were both cushioned by the goalkeeper to deny him a chance to add his name on the night’s scoresheet. Aubrey Modiba was also denied a goal from a free-kick opportunity.
On the 81st minute, Masandawana found the third goal through Thapelo Maseko. It was Arthur Sales who found the counter and made a defence-splitting pass to Maseko who converted comfortably for his side. Bafana Ba Style controlled the rest of the match and held on to the three points and another cleansheet.
