Alonso steps down from Leverkusen bench, eyes Real Madrid return

It’s now official: Xabi Alonso will leave Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the season. The Spanish coach, who took over the struggling German side in 2022 and turned them into Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal champions, announced the news in an emotional press conference this Friday.

While he didn’t confirm his next destination, all signs point to a return to Real Madrid, where he is expected to replace Carlo Ancelotti. “It’s the right moment,” Alonso explained. “I’ve always had a clear relationship with the club, and now is the time to share this decision with the fans.”

Leverkusen also released a statement confirming the coach’s early contract termination, initially set to run until 2026. Alonso made it clear that the announcement was timed out of respect for his players and staff, who were informed earlier that morning. Despite repeated questions from journalists about Real Madrid, Alonso remained firm, stating, “This is not the time to talk about the future.” He avoided all hints about his next step, even jokingly dodging questions about visas and upcoming tournaments with his potential future club.

During his time at Leverkusen, Alonso transformed the team from relegation contenders into domestic champions, with a nearly flawless record this season. His tactical discipline, player development, and calm leadership have drawn widespread praise, catching the eye of Real Madrid. Though he hasn’t said it publicly, his move to the Spanish capital is now seen as a formality. A new chapter awaits him, with massive expectations and a world-class squad, including new superstar Kylian Mbappé.
