Ghana Premier League Hearts of Oak and Kotoko Urge Fans to Make Stadiums Safe Havens as Ghana Marks 24 Years Since May 9 Disaster

Accra Hearts of Oak have called on their supporters to recommit to peace and safety at match venues as the club leads solemn commemorations marking 24 years since the May 9 Stadium Disaster—the darkest day in Ghana’s football history.

In a heartfelt statement released on Friday, the club remembered the 126 lives lost during a league match against arch-rivals Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium in 2001. The tragedy, caused by overcrowding and a stampede following police action, left an indelible scar on Ghana’s sporting landscape.

“Today, May 9th, marks a day that is forever etched in the memory of Ghana football,” the club wrote. “We extend our deepest condolences once again to the families and loved ones of the departed… We call upon all our fans to continue to be ambassadors of peace and good sportsmanship.”

The commemoration was led by the Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Idi Kofi Adams, who laid a wreath in memory of the fallen and emphasized the government’s ongoing commitment to stadium safety reforms.

Hearts of Oak’s statement further urged fans to “adhere to safety protocols” and ensure that “our stadiums are places of joy, unity, and passionate support, free from any form of violence.”

Asante Kotoko, the club’s traditional rivals and the opposing side on the day of the tragedy, also released a statement of solidarity. “24 years ago today, a thick dark cloud engulfed our country… we will continue to mourn our fallen sons and daughters and forever stand against any form of violence at our match venues,” it read.

With both clubs united in grief and resolve, the call is clear: never again should such a tragedy be allowed to happen. As Ghana remembers, Hearts of Oak and Kotoko are setting a powerful example—one of reflection, unity, and a renewed commitment to safe football experiences for all.
