The Delta State Government has formally disbanded the Delta Queens Football Club’s management board, technical staff, and playing squad in an audacious move to revitalise one of Nigeria’s most illustrious women’s football teams.
The Delta State Sports Commission made the announcement in a statement on Wednesday. Signing the press release, Commission Public Relations Director Franka Okonma highlighted that the action is a part of a larger plan to turn around the team’s waning performance in the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL).
“This dissolution is necessary to reposition the club for greater efficiency, professionalism, and competitiveness.
“A new management board, technical crew, and a fresh set of players will be constituted shortly,” the statement said.
A dominant force in Nigerian women’s football for a long time, Delta Queens is based in Asaba and hosts games at Stephen Keshi Stadium.
The team has produced players for the national team and has won numerous domestic championships.
However, a number of subpar games this season have angered supporters and worried important parties.
A well-known person in Nigerian football, Peter Dedevbo, was the team’s coach prior to its dissolution.
The team struggled to retain form despite his experience and prior victories, which forced the government to implement a complete reset.
The Sports Commission told the public that measures are ongoing to reconstruct the club with a renewed vision and defined objectives.
The state administration reiterated its commitment to supporting sports development, notably in women’s football.
In the upcoming weeks, more details about the team’s new lineup and leadership should be revealed.
