Nigerian referee Yemisi Akintoye and eighteen other referees have been chosen by the Confederation of African Football to officiate at the next CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations event, which will be held in Morocco from July 5–26.
After performing well at the WAFCON preparatory course earlier this month in Cairo, Egypt, the 30-year-old, a member of the Lagos State Football Referees Council, secured her spot in the event.
She has refereed in the WAFU B Women’s Champions League, WAFU B U-20 Championship, and CAF Women’s Champions League, respectively, and was certified as a FIFA referee in 2021.
Of the 46 officials chosen for Africa’s top women’s football tournament, Akintoye is the only Nigerian on the list.
During the event, ten people have been scheduled to serve as VMOs, while another 18 will serve as assistant referees and 18 as match officials.
While the nine-time champion Super Falcons have been drawn in Group B with Tunisia, Botswana, and Algeria, the event will see the South African Banyana Banyana defend the crown they won in 2022.
