Club World Cup: Ander Herrera hit with 4-match ban

FIFA has handed down a four-match suspension to Boca Juniors’ Ander Herrera following his red card against Benfica in the Club World Cup.

Though injured and on the bench, the Spaniard was sent off for aggressively protesting a late decision, sparking frustration among Boca fans. His teammate Nicolas Figal also received a four-match ban for a harsh tackle in the 88th minute, leaving the team without two key players for most of the tournament.

The severity of the punishments has raised eyebrows, especially when compared to Andrea Belotti’s two-match suspension for a dangerous but accidental challenge. With disciplinary consistency under scrutiny, attention now shifts to Manchester City’s Rico Lewis, who was also sent off and awaits FIFA’s verdict. The message is clear: FIFA is tightening discipline in this tournament, even if it fuels controversy.
