Brazil’s Botafogo stunned the European champions 1-0 on Thursday, fending off waves of Paris St. Germain assaults and opening up Group B at the Club World Cup.
In their first competitive encounter, Botafogo’s unwavering defence held up well against PSG’s dominating possession in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
Igor Jesus scored in the 36th minute after Jefferson Savarino slid a pass through after Botafogo had taken possession in midfield.
Goalie Gianluigi Donnarumma was caught off guard as Jesus outmanoeuvred two defenders and his shot bounced off PSG’s Willian Pacho’s thigh.
The ball changed course, and Donnarumma could only watch as it slid into the net.
Delusional Botafogo supporters surrounded Jesus as he hopped over the barrier to rejoice.
In the second half, PSG maintained their offensive edge while Botafogo was happy to hold onto their lead and attempt to take advantage of the break.
In the 79th minute, Botafogo held for the unexpected victory after PSG, who had scored 19 goals in their previous five games, had the ball in the net but the goal was chalked off for offside.
When Liverpool defeated PSG 1-0 in the Champions League in March, the Brazilians became the first team to stop them from scoring.
Before losing on Thursday, the French team had scored in 19 straight games.
Renato Paiva, coach of Botafogo, claimed that his squad had defeated PSG at their own game.
