In a thrilling 4-3 Club globe Cup match, Mamelodi Sundowns’ coach Miguel Cardoso says his team “earned respect from the world” by pushing Borussia Dortmund to the limit.
He says they leave Cincinnati with their heads held high. Lucas Ribeiro’s goal from halfway on minute eleven surprised the Bundesliga powerhouses, but individual mistakes allowed Dortmund to gain ground and the Germans led 3-1 at the break.
The South African champions remained resilient despite Khuliso Mudau’s own goal extending the gap to three goals.
Iqraam Rayners scored on a rebound, and replacement Lebo Mothiba set up a thrilling finish with a tap-in in the 90th minute.
“This was a hell of an experience for the players,” Cardoso told reporters after the match that kept fans on the edge of their seats.
“We grew a lot from this match. We can compete. We showed that we are on the pitch and we are not afraid.
“We were brave enough and took them to the limit.”
Cardoso believes that late surge underlined his squad’s character.
“I already heard that Dortmund will remember this match for a long time and that is absolutely beautiful for me.”
Although the loss stops Sundowns’ undefeated streak, Fluminense’s 4-2 victory over Ulsan HD in the other group match leaves Group F evenly matched.
Masandawana can still advance to the quarterfinals if they defeat the Brazilian champs on Tuesday; if not, they will have to rely on Dortmund to defeat Ulsan.
Cardoso is aware that defensive errors must be eliminated, particularly the errant pass made by Ronwen Williams that allowed Felix Nmecha to equalise.
Long after the final whistle blew, South African supporters inside TQL Stadium continued to sing in appreciation of a performance that combined flair and tenacity.
Cardoso is hoping that the momentum will continue into the match against Fluminense.
