Algeria Tragedy Mars Title Celebration as MC Alger Fans Killed in Stadium Accident

Algiers, Algeria – What was meant to be a night of celebration for MC Alger turned into a devastating tragedy as the club’s long-awaited league title was overshadowed by a fatal incident in the stands of the 5 July 1962 Stadium.

MC Alger had just been crowned national champions, but before the trophy could be lifted, chaos unfolded when a stadium barrier on the second floor gave way, sending fans plunging into the lower tier. According to reports from the Algerian Civil Protection, three supporters lost their lives in the tragic incident, with over 70 others injured, some critically.

Witnesses described scenes of panic, confusion, and grief as emergency responders rushed into the stands to tend to the injured and evacuate the wounded. The celebrations were immediately halted, and the atmosphere shifted from jubilation to mourning within moments.

“This is a dark day for Algerian football,” said an official from the Algerian Football Federation. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims, and we are working closely with authorities to understand exactly what happened and ensure it never happens again.”

Initial investigations suggest that the barrier, unable to withstand the pressure of the surging crowd, collapsed as fans moved forward in anticipation of the trophy presentation. Many of the injured were treated on-site, while others were transported to nearby hospitals.

MC Alger, one of the giant clubs in North African football, was poised to celebrate their national title in years. Instead, players, coaches, and fans were left in shock, with several team members visibly emotional as they abandoned the trophy ceremony to console grieving supporters.

In a brief statement, the club expressed its heartbreak:
“MC Alger mourns with the families of the deceased. This title was for the people, and we grieve with them tonight. May the souls of the departed rest in peace.”

What should have been a night of pride and celebration has instead become one of the most sorrowful moments in Algerian football history.
