africa football Eko International Cup Postponed by One Week to Ensure Competitive Fairness

Organisers of the much-anticipated Eko International Cup have confirmed that the start date of the tournament has been pushed back by one week. Originally scheduled to kick off on 6th July 2025, the tournament will now commence on 13th July 2025.

The decision was made to “ensure proper preparation, player welfare, and fairness across all participating clubs.”

One of the key reasons for the postponement stems from the recent sale and name change of South African club SuperSports. The club is currently undergoing a rebranding process following the acquisition, and the new management requires time to finalise structural and administrative changes, including formalising the new name ahead of the competition.

Additionally, Remo Stars and Dadje FC, who have both just concluded victorious league campaigns in their respective countries, are in need of recovery time. The organisers believe the one-week delay will give both sides a full three-week break to rest, regroup, and prepare adequately for the high-intensity Pre-season tournament.

Another major consideration was the schedule of Ghanaian giants Accra Hearts of Oak, who are set to face their archrivals Asante Kotoko in the President’s Cup on 6th July, followed by another fixture which would have been the Eko International Cup on 7th July. The back-to-back matches raised concerns of fatigue and fairness, prompting organisers to review the initial schedule.

The Eko International Cup which serves as the Preseason tournament promises to deliver exciting matchups across West Africa, and this brief delay is expected to enhance the overall quality and competitiveness of the event.
