Nigeria’s Rafiatu Folashade Lawal delivered a sensational performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, setting new Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth records in the women’s 58kg snatch event.

Lawal lifted an impressive 103kg in the snatch to rewrite the record books and strengthen her bid for another gold medal for Team Nigeria.

The remarkable effort gives the Nigerian a comfortable lead going into the Clean & Jerk event, where she is well placed to challenge for the top prize.

Canada’s Ann-Sophie Taschereau is currently second after successfully lifting 94kg in the snatch, leaving Lawal with a nine-kilogram advantage ahead of the final phase of the competition.

Lawal’s record-breaking feat continues Nigeria’s strong campaign in weightlifting at the Glasgow Games, with the country’s lifters maintaining their reputation as one of the continent’s leading forces in the sport.

With the decisive Clean & Jerk event still to come, Lawal will be aiming to convert her commanding lead into another Commonwealth Games gold medal for Team Nigeria.
